Growing out of a prototype conceived for the Super Nintendo, Super Mario hit the gaming landscape like a thunderbolt of Italian stereotypes in 1996. Shigeru Miyamoto had managed to push back the launch of the Nintendo 64 from its prime holiday release window in 1995 to give a handful of precious months to finish development on Super Mario 64. It was a massive gamble, but the release delivered a landmark example on how to create a 3D platformer on consoles that shaped generations of games and gamers.

Looking back on it over two decades later, can Super Mario 64 still be considered one of the best games period or has time taken its toll?

In 2010, renowned RPG developer Level-5 released Ni no Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn for the Nintendo DS in Japan. The game received a huge wave of attention due to the unique collaboration between Level-5 and the famed film animation studio Ghibli. A year later the game saw a worldwide release for the PlayStation 3 under the title Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. Though the two games had much in common, like storylines and cutscenes, the games were developed by different teams within Level-5 and played differently. With the extra year of polish, the PS3 version wowed critics and audiences alike with smooth visuals, a fully orchestrated soundtrack, and an awful lot of heart.

Is Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch one of the best games period?

In 1994, the now defunct LJN made a major play to break away from its well-known industry niche of adapting popular movie franchises into video games. The result of their labor was Revengent Star, an ambitious and strange RPG that hoped to compete with the likes of Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire. While unconfirmed, the effort put into the creation of Revengent Star was widely suspected to have led to the eventual downfall of LJN. The technology used to create the unique cartridges the game required proved to be costly leading to precious few copies released. Most copies were only sold to rental stores (remember those??) as part of an agreement that forbid resale.

Join us this week for a trip down memory lane; is Revengent Star one of the best games period?
